Poster promoting the Daily 4, 4 stephs to good dental hygiene, for National Dental Hygiene MonthDid you know that October is National Dental Hygiene month. Dr. Stuart Rimes, Dentist at Rimes D.D.S. in Sugar Land, Texas, wants everyone to know the importance of dental hygiene and offers the ADA 4-step program for healthy teeth in response to common dental questions he has heard over his many years in practice:

  1. Q: How often do I need to brush my teeth?

A: Brush your teeth at least twice a day, three times if you can. Brushing removes bacteria and plaque that would otherwise build-up over time causing cavities, loss of teeth, gum disease and bad breath! Plaque buildup has a correlation to heart disease, so you can help your heart by brushing your teeth

  2. Q: How often do I need to floss?

A: Floss daily for healthy gums. Flossing helps remove bacteria between your teeth and near your gum line.

  3. Q: Do I really need to use mouthwash?

A: Absolutely, mouthwash helps kill bacteria and dislodge food particles between the teeth, around the gums and even tucked away in the back of your mouth.

  4. Q: What else can I do besides brushing my teeth, flossing and using mouthwash?

A: Chew sugar-free gum. Chewing gum increases the flow of saliva which neutralizes and washes away acids that exist after eating. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after meals.
